The Mandalorian and Grogu hits home video in four different shapes — and only one of them is a disc you keep

Lucasfilm has released Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu for home viewing, and the release pattern is a clean illustration of how a single film now fragments into several incompatible products.

Per StarWars.com, the film is available on digital platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango; on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray; and streaming on Disney+. The physical line-up includes a standard 4K UHD + Blu-ray + Digital Code edition, a SteelBook version, and a Beskar Collector's Edition with special packaging, SteelBook and metal posters. The digital and Blu-ray versions carry bonus content including featurettes and audio commentary.

Four products, one film

Read as a shelf problem rather than a shopping list, that is four distinct objects with four different lifespans. The Disney+ stream exists at the platform's discretion and can be re-encoded, re-graded or removed. The digital purchase is a licence tied to a storefront account. The standard disc is the durable copy. The Beskar edition is a packaging product where much of the price is in the metal posters and the box.

A collector who buys all four owns one film and four unrelated failure modes. A collector who buys none and streams it owns nothing, which is fine until it isn't.

Cataloguing the difference

This is exactly the case our archive method was built for. Each of these is its own record — not a quantity field on one entry. Format, packaging variant, whether the bonus content is on the disc or gated behind the digital code, and whether the commentary appears on the 4K disc or only on the Blu-ray are all things that determine, years later, which copy is actually worth keeping.

The audio commentary point is the one most often lost. Commentary tracks and featurettes routinely appear on one format and not another, and they are among the first things dropped from later reissues and from streaming versions entirely. If a supplement matters to you, the disc that carries it is the copy of record, regardless of which one has the better box.
