Zack Snyder says the 300 prequel series is still coming — and he wants to direct it
Nearly twenty years after the film, Snyder confirms a television prequel is in the works, with no plot, no home and no date.

Zack Snyder has confirmed that a prequel television series set in the world of 300 is still moving forward, and that he expects to direct at least part of it.
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, as reported by ComicBook.com, Snyder answered a direct question about whether the project was getting closer with a flat "Yes", and gave the same answer when asked whether he would direct episodes. He would not describe the story: "I don't think I'm allowed to say, I would love to. But it's cool!" He also called the setting "a very rich universe".
News of a 300 series first surfaced roughly two years ago and has been quiet since. Snyder's comments are the first real confirmation that it survived that silence, which is not the same as a green light with a date attached.
The same conversation cleared up the missing third film. Snyder confirmed he was asked to write another 300 movie, intended to be about Alexander the Great, and that the research took the script somewhere else entirely. "It got hijacked by history," he said, describing what became a love story between Alexander and Hephaestion. The script exists. It was never made, and it is no longer a 300 film.
What the series would actually cover is an open question. The 2007 film already handled much of Leonidas's origin, and 2014's 300: Rise of an Empire functioned as sequel, prequel and parallel story at once. The gaps are narrow.
The practical obstacles are the familiar ones. The original was made for a reported $65 million, a figure that buys considerably less two decades later, and the project's eventual home is unclear while Paramount and Warner Bros. remain the subject of merger speculation. None of that has been resolved publicly.
There is a collecting footnote here too. 300 was one of the films that legitimised shooting almost entirely against blue screen, and its home releases have been a decent index of how studios package a visual-effects showcase — each format transition produced another edition claiming to be the definitive one. A prequel series arriving near the film's twentieth anniversary will almost certainly trigger another round.
