Aesop Rock and Blockhead announce Trouble Mountain — and a fake ski lodge to set it in

Aesop Rock and Blockhead have announced Trouble Mountain, their next joint album and the follow-up to 2021's Garbology, due 13 November on Rhymesayers. The seventeen-track record features guest verses from Open Mike Eagle, Hanni El Khatib, Baby Dayliner, Cavalier and 4-IZE, and arrives with a first single and an animated video set on a ski slope.

The framing comes from Aesop Rock himself, who clarified in a statement that he has never actually skied but grew up around it through relatives in the Poconos. "I spent many weekends there as a kid — though, of course not in a sick party lodge," he wrote, describing the record as "me and Blockhead's (fake) Ski Lodge where you might meet your future spouse or you might have to fight some local ski gangs."

Why a concept frame still works

Rap albums built around a location are an old device and an easy one to do badly. The version that works is closer to a stage set than a story: a place with its own rules, weather and social hierarchy that gives otherwise unrelated songs a shared temperature. A lodge full of strangers stuck indoors is, structurally, a very good excuse for seventeen tracks.

It also solves a practical problem for a producer-and-rapper duo album. Garbology worked because Blockhead's production supplied continuity across a long tracklist; a conceit does the same job from the writing side, and lets guests appear without the record fragmenting into a compilation.

The object

This is where the announcement matters to an archive. Rhymesayers has a long record of treating albums as things: coloured variants, deluxe packaging, inserts. A dated November release on an established independent label is a reasonable bet for a physical edition, and joint albums in particular tend to be pressed once and then quietly not repressed.

If you catalogue rap on vinyl, the note to make now is simple: release date, label, catalogue status pending, and a reminder to check pressing details on announcement rather than three months after the fact, when the first pressing is a resale listing rather than a purchase.
