Soccer Mommy returns with “Rings of Saturn”, her first new song in two years

Sophie Allison has released “Rings of Saturn”, the first new Soccer Mommy song in two years, produced by Elliott Kozel — a collaborator of Rosalía and Björk — and accompanied by a video directed by Suji Park.

In a statement quoted by Pitchfork, Allison described the track as being "about feeling lost and looking for hope from anywhere", written during a difficult period when she would take a telescope into the yard to look at the moon and planets: "There's something about feeling small that can kind of take the weight off."

That is the whole editorial context, and it is worth being precise about it. This is a single release, not an album announcement. Allison's most recent full-length, Evergreen, arrived in 2024 and was followed by the acoustic Evergreen (Stripped).

Where it sits in the release calendar

The timing is not accidental. Allison heads out on a co-headlining tour with Snail Mail beginning 30 September in Charlotte, and she recently opened two shows on Liz Phair and Sleater-Kinney's joint run. A first song in two years, dropped days before a co-headline tour, is a release strategy as much as it is a record: it gives the live show something current to stand on without committing to an album cycle.

The physical-media footnote

For anyone who catalogues music rather than simply plays it, singles like this are the awkward category. There is no object yet. A digital single with a video has no pressing, no matrix, no sleeve stock and nothing to shelve, and if it is eventually folded into an album it may exist in a different mix, a different sequence, or not at all.
