Death Cab for Cutie book a 2027 North American run behind I Built You a Tower

Death Cab for Cutie have announced a North American tour for early 2027 in support of I Built You a Tower, extending a touring cycle that already had dates booked across Europe, Japan and Australia plus a one-off Chicago show in November.

The North American leg opens in Nashville in March and runs into spring, with two nights each in Atlanta and Boston, a New York date at Radio City Music Hall, and — as Pitchfork notes — a Niagara Falls show sitting almost exactly on the US/Canada border. Swapmeet are supporting the newly added dates. A Honolulu date in January precedes the run.

Announced alongside the tour is a video for “Stone Over Water” by musician and animator Sean Solomon. In a press release, Solomon said he normally animates videos for his own songs but found this one "incredibly personal, even though it wasn't mine", adding that he wanted the result to carry a positive message: "Everyone is going through something, and sometimes helping others can be a way to get out of our own heads and remember we're not alone."

The long-cycle album

What is notable here is not the routing but the duration. I Built You a Tower is being toured across three continents and into a second calendar year, which is increasingly the shape of a mid-career rock release: the record is the permission slip, and the tour is the product.

That has consequences for how the album is eventually remembered. Songs get rearranged live long before any live document exists, and by the time a tour edition, live pressing or anniversary reissue appears — if one ever does — the definitive version of a track in listeners' heads may be the one played in a room, not the one on the record.

For the shelf

Tour announcements are worth logging even if you never buy a ticket, because they predict objects: tour-exclusive pressings, venue variants, splatter editions sold at a merch table and nowhere else. Those are the records that become genuinely difficult to find in five years, and they are almost never catalogued properly at the time because they arrive in a plastic bag at 11pm.
